Market makers continuously post buy and sell limit orders around the mid-price, earning the bid-ask spread on each matched trade. In crypto, market making is profitable but demanding — you need to manage inventory risk (accumulating assets that move against you), react instantly to price movements, and maintain uptime across multiple venues simultaneously. Successful market making requires sophisticated inventory management, dynamic skewing logic, and very low execution latency.
Trend Following
Cryptocurrency markets exhibit strong trending behaviour — assets that have been rising tend to continue rising, and vice versa. Trend following systems identify these momentum signals using technical indicators (moving averages, RSI, MACD) or statistical measures and enter positions in the direction of the trend, exiting when the trend shows signs of reversal. This strategy works well in crypto's boom-bust cycles but requires careful drawdown management during choppy, ranging markets.
Arbitrage
Price differences between exchanges and between spot and derivatives markets create arbitrage opportunities. Simple cross-exchange arbitrage (buy cheap on Exchange A, sell expensive on Exchange B) has become extremely competitive — the windows close in milliseconds and require co-located infrastructure and optimised execution to be profitable. More complex forms — statistical arbitrage between correlated pairs, funding rate arbitrage between perpetuals and spot, and on-chain flash loan arbitrage — remain viable with the right technical approach. Mean Reversion
When prices deviate significantly from their historical average or from a correlated asset, mean reversion strategies bet on the gap closing. Mean reversion works best in ranging markets and can suffer badly during trend-dominated environments, so many systematic traders combine it with trend-following signals for balance.
Grid Trading
Grid bots place buy and sell orders at fixed price intervals, continuously buying on dips and selling on rallies within a defined range. They require no directional prediction — they simply profit from oscillation. Grid strategies work well for stable, range-bound assets but can accumulate significant unrealised losses if the asset trends strongly outside the grid range. They are popular for assets with high baseline volatility but no clear directional bias.
